Varalakshmi Vratam.

Varalakshmi Vratam is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the southern states of India, such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. This auspicious day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu and the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. The word "Vara" means boon, and "Lakshmi" signifies wealth, making Varalakshmi the giver of boons and prosperity.

Significance of Varalakshmi Vratam.

  • Varalakshmi Vratam is observed to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, particularly in the form of “Dhanalakshmi” (wealth), “Dhanyalakshmi” (grains and food), and “Santanalakshmi” (progeny). Married women, in particular, observe this fast for the well-being of their family, the prosperity of their household, and the longevity of their husbands. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping the eight forms of Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi).

When is Varalakshmi Vratam Celebrated ?

  • Varalakshmi Vratam is observed on the second Friday or the Friday before the full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August). This period is considered highly auspicious, and many festivals related to the worship of female deities are celebrated during this time.

Rituals and Observance .

  • Preparation :- The house is cleaned, and the place of worship is decorated with flowers, rangoli (colorful designs), and kolam (traditional designs).
    – A kalasha (sacred pot) filled with water, rice, or coins is placed at the altar. The kalasha symbolizes Goddess Lakshmi.
    – A coconut with turmeric and kumkum (vermillion) is placed on top of the kalasha, and mango leaves are arranged around it.
  • Puja (Worship) :-  The puja begins with invoking Lord Ganesha to remove any obstacles in the rituals.
    – The Varalakshmi Vratam puja involves chanting various mantras and offering flowers, fruits, sweets, and other items to the goddess.
    – A special offering of nine varieties of grains (Navadhanyam) is made to please the goddess.
  • Tying the Sacred Thread :- One of the significant rituals is the tying of the “Swarna Rekha” or sacred thread on the right hand. This thread is considered a protective charm that carries the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
    – Women tie this thread after completing the puja, and it is believed to bring prosperity and protect the family from evil.
  • Fasting :- Women observe a fast throughout the day, which is broken after the evening puja. The fast is typically strict, with only fruits and milk consumed during the day.
    – In some traditions, the fast is observed only until the puja is completed, after which a special feast is prepared.

  • Special Prasadam :- Various dishes, especially sweets like “Payasam” (a type of rice pudding) and “Vada” (savory fritters), are prepared as an offering to the goddess.
    – These dishes are later shared among family members and neighbors as prasadam (blessed food).

  • Charity and Sharing :- Charity plays an essential role in the observance of Varalakshmi Vratam. Devotees often give alms, food, and clothes to the needy, believing that it will multiply the blessings they receive from the goddess.

  • Legends Associated with Varalakshmi Vratam :-

    One of the most popular legends associated with Varalakshmi Vratam is that of a devout woman named Charumathi. According to the legend, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in Charumathi’s dream and instructed her to perform the Varalakshmi Vratam. Following the goddess’s instructions, Charumathi performed the puja with devotion, and soon after, she and her family were blessed with wealth, prosperity, and happiness. This story underscores the importance of the vratam and the blessings it can bestow upon those who observe it with faith.
